Rio Tinto Standardises Designs

In May 2008, Projenco was engaged to assist Rio Tinto to prepare standard design documentation for upcoming expansion projects for their Pilbara iron ore mining operations. The standard designs will be produced for significant items of mining installation, such as crushing stations, workshops, warehouses, etc.

Projenco, in conjunction with Rio Tinto, has developed a fast-track workshop process which is preceded by a visit to site by Rio Tinto management personnel and their consultants who assess a previous design with the operational and maintenance personnel responsible for the facility and determine improvements which could feature in the new standards.

At the workshop, each facility is separated into Work Breakdown Structure elements and a computerised ‘Fishbone’ problem evaluation system is used to evaluate and record standardised options live. This forms the basis of an Output Document which is prepared during the workshop and is handed over to Rio Tinto at the workshop’s completion. The Output Document is then used to guide the design team preparing the standard designs.
